The backgrounds of the flowers were stippled to give definition to the hand pieced flowers. The sashings were filled with vines to carry through the theme to the quilt top. The green boarder was left unquilted to give some empty space to an otherwise heavily quilted design. The outer boarder echoes the shape of the main feature flowers to tie in the centre with the boarders and finish the quilt.

Custom quilting was used on this quilt to create dimension and movement while staying within the oriental theme. Oriental quilts are about texture and the elements and so each block was treated individually to bring out their beauty. The quilting helps to bring out the tranquillity of the patchwork.
Quilt made by Rae Simonsen
Rae’s quilt was customised with freehand vine leaves and tendrils to draw on the patterns incorporated within the fabrics of the quilt. Using ditch work around each petal of the Dresden plates makes them stand out from their textured backgrounds. The narrow boarders create a resting point when left unquilted and allows the outer boarder’s ‘scroll’ to stand on its own and bring the whole quilt together.

Custom quilting can be truly effective when it is kept simple. This quilt has ¼” outlining around the appliquéd hearts. Incorporating ditch work around the blocks gives body to the quilt and some whimsical freehand butterflies gives some interest to the charming design.
Quilt made by Pat Cloughessy
Alternatively, heavy custom quilting can give a quilt a duel purpose. Pat’s quilt incorporates freehand swirls and icons to highlight and hold the quilt. The quilting stands out on the backing fabric; while blending into the front, allowing the quilt to be reversible.
Quilt made by Janis Dregde
Janis’s “Storm at Sea” quilt required a unique quilting texture. In keeping with the ocean theme of the patchwork pattern, freehand curved lines where used to add a movement similar to swells or waves.
Quilt Made by Helen Southeren
This autumn leaves quilt was custom quilted, to give the best possible effect to the quilt top. Shadow leaves were added to provide additional texture, while ditch work was used around the pieced leaves to make them stand out and give definition to the features.
Quilt made by Theresia Stocton
Theresia's 'Autumn Leaves' quilt required a unique custom quilting design. The detailed quilting does not detract from the front of the quilt, yet gives the back a unique life full of texture.
Quilt made by Judy Margin
Judy made this quilt for her granddaughter and wanted the quilting to appeal to a young woman. Drawing from the colours and shapes of the patchwork, the quilting incorporates a balance between childhood whimsy of hearts in flowers to the adult structure of ditch work to give definition.
